A patient at Ryhov County Hospital in Jönköping County has been shown to be infected with the new coronavirus discovered in China. This is shown by the Swedish Public Health Agency’s sample analysis.

The Swedish Public Health Agency has carried out about 20 analyzes of samples from people who developed respiratory symptoms after staying in the affected area in China. A positive case has now been identified in the Jönköping County Region.

– It is not unexpected with one or a few cases given that we travel a lot and it was part of our assessments that it could happen. Similar cases have also been identified in a number of other countries, says Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of department at the Swedish Public Health Agency.

This applies to a woman who visited the Wuhan area in China, and who developed symptoms in the form of a cough, after she arrived in Sweden. She landed in Sweden on January 24 and was then symptom-free. The woman contacted the care herself. The Jönköping County Region has followed the guidelines that exist regarding suspected infection and the woman is currently isolated at the infection clinic. The woman developed symptoms in the form of a cough and she is not seriously ill.

– It is important to remember that individual cases are not the same as that we have a spread of infection in Sweden. We currently assess this risk to be very low based on experience from other countries. The health service has routines for dealing with cases like this in a good and safe way, says Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of department at the Swedish Public Health Agency.
